UNWIND from being busy 4

So if you’ve got an hour or two (luxury) :

1. BAKE A CAKE

What’s your guilty pleasure?

2. CREATE TIME

For a more philosophical approach – with fewer calories! – imagine you only have 48 hours to live.

What would you do?

This exercise helps you see what is important in your life – people rarely say they’d be at work!

Thinking like this can help put things in perspective and limit the time you spend at work.

3. DECLUTTER bis

I spoke last week of decluttering your work space, but you should do the same in your home life. Being organised at home AND at work can free up time to do the things that matter.

4. PAMPER YOURSELF

No self-respecting massage blog could sign off an article about de-stressing without suggesting a massage.

Treat yourself to a well-deserved pamper

For less stress, add magnesium

There are plenty of spas around here in France which are based around the healing powers of their local mineral-rich thermal spa waters – there’s a long history of “taking the waters” in Europe generally.

Budapest's Szechenyi thermal baths

Budapest’s Szechenyi thermal baths

It can be hard to bathe every day at home in mineral water but you can add mineral salts to a bath once a week to mimic the spa experience at home.

Research shows that two-thirds of us are deficient in magnesium, which has been proven to help ease stress, headaches, muscle tension and help regulate bowel movements to ease constipation.

You can add magnesium flakes to your bath (available from health food stores) or try old-fashioned Epsom Salts, which are high in magnesium (by the way, check out these 13 uses of Epsom salts whilst you’re at it or Hello Natural’s Healing Epsom Salt bath soak).

salt

I myself swear by a daily 300mg magnesium supplement to radically ease my PMS symptoms (notably the raging beast I helplessly become just before my period – but strangely only since the birth of my third child…).

Having just bought some Epsom salts, I’m going to try them out too in a bath…as soon as I have a bath.Well I do have a bath but it has a sort of seat in it and basically you can’t have a decent bath in it, believe me, I’ve tried. Very good for bathing kids though (it works kind of like half a bath). Confused? Don’t be.

I’ll maybe try a foot soak in the meantime.

Not my feet by the way!

Of course I’ve told you here that magnesium can help your muscle tension, headaches and stress, but so too can massage.

Massage oil blends

As promised in my last post, here are some oil blends/recipes for massage.

First you can go back to a recent post of mine for a Blissed Out massage oil blend.

Here are some more to try:

Relaxing blend from Josephine Fairley The Ultimate natural beauty book, Silverdale books.

Calendula macerated oil

Calendula macerated oil

4 tbs each of:

chamomile macerated oil,

marigold (calendula) macerated oil,

lavender macerated oil

geranium macerated oil

5 drops chamomile essential oil (optional)

5 drops lavender essential oil (optional)

Pour the macerated oils into a bottle (preferably dark) to blend, add the essential oils if using, then shake well and allow to settle.

(You can make your own macerated oils by following my step-by-step guide here.)

Ivy leaf anti-cellulite oil by Josephine Fairley (idem above)

Ivy leaves are easy to come by – even if you don’t have any in your garden, you’ll find them growing in the wild.

Ivy leaves are easy to come by

Ivy leaves are easy to come by

15 large fresh ivy leaves

125 ml grapeseed oil

1 tsp wheatgerm oil

15 drops juniper essential oil

5 drops fennel essential oil

5 drops rosemary essential oil

Bruise the ivy leaves in a pestle and mortar, place in the bottom of a jar (a  sterilised jam jar will do the trick) and pour the grapeseed and wheatgerm oil over them. Add the  essential oils. Leave the mixture to macerate for one week then strain out the ivy leaves.

Massage into problem areas. Ideally body-brush first to maximise circulation.

Rich hand oil from James Wong Grow your own drugs, published by Collins.

Treat your hands with a rich oil

Treat your hands with a rich oil

4 tsp avocado oil

2 tsp evening primrose oil

2 tsp vitamin E oil

5 drops sandalwood essential oil

5 drops lemon essential oil

5 drops geranium essential oil.

Put all the ingredients in a sterilised jar and shake to mix thoroughly. Massage a small amount into hands and feet as needed.

There are several recipes for massage blends in Laurel Vukovic’s book 1001 Natural Remedies published by Dorling Kindersley. Energising, sensual, relaxing, comforting, soothing, morale-boosting.ginger

Here is a comforting blend, which is warm and spicey:

6 tbsp sweet almond oil

2 tbsp jojoba oil

20 drops sandalwood essential oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

10 drops ginger essential oil.

And finally, if you want to try your own blends, remember to keep to these proportions of essential oil (e.o.) to carrier oil:

Body massage : 1 drop e.o. in 2 ml carrier oil (= 20 drops in  40 ml)

Facial massage: 1 drop e.o. in 4 ml carrier oil (= 10 drops in 40 ml)
