Reminder massage offer

Do you have tension in your back?

Our backs are one of the tensest areas in the body – all that sitting in front of computers, holding phones between ear and shoulder, carrying heavy bags around, wearing high heels…the list is endless when it comes to the strain we put our backs under on a daily basis.

No wonder then that a back massage is sheer heaven for most of us, as all those muscular tensions are eased away by a professional massage therapist.

Here at Just Massage the most requested massage is by far for your poor backs – and there are a lot of knotty people out there!

So set aside an hour this month to have your muscles soothed in our expert hands, and at a discount too!

40€ instead of 50€ for a one-hour back massage.

This thorough massage works on the back, neck and scalp and relieves accumulated tension in these areas. It uses techniques from Traditional Chinese massage, or TuiNa.

Valid up to and including 31st August 2017.

Offer does not apply to gift vouchers.

UNWIND from being busy 4

Unwind with a sweet treat – but no feeling guilty…

2. CREATE TIME

For a more philosophical approach – with fewer calories! – imagine you only have 48 hours to live.

What would you do?

This exercise helps you see what is important in your life – people rarely say they’d be at work!

Thinking like this can help put things in perspective and limit the time you spend at work.

3. DECLUTTER bis

I spoke last week of decluttering your work space, but you should do the same in your home life. Being organised at home AND at work can free up time to do the things that matter.

4. PAMPER YOURSELF

No self-respecting massage blog could sign off an article about de-stressing without suggesting a massage.

Traditional Chinese massage explained

Traditional Chinese massage, also known as TuiNa, is actually a very complicated and complete form of massage which is centuries old. To try and describe it succinctly is somewhat doing it an injustice but here goes.

TuiNa is part of traditional Chinese medicine (just as massage is an integral part of India’s Ayurvedic medecine) and one of the oldest treatments alongside acupuncture and phytotherapy.

The aim of TuiNa is to promote the circulation of qi – vital energy – in the body by unblocking the meridians (energy channels), balancing left and right sides of the body, top and bottom, and back and front.

Just take a quick look at this chart of the body’s meridians and you’ll understand the complexity of it all.

Alongside this is the notion of the elements which rule us and balance our yin and yang (two complementary principles of Chinese philosphy, one dark, one bright).

yin

Traditional Chinese massage incorporates all these notions and treats all parts of the body from the head to the feet. It doesn’t just use massage, though – there may also be pressure to specific points to remove blockages, as well as some passive manipulation.

What to expect

A minimum amount of massage oil is used, just enough for comfort and treatment starts with a hands-on pause to allow the therapist to make first contact. The massage begins with long, slow strokes (effleurage) to warm up muscle tissue prior to working on releasing any knots or areas of tension. Different techniques exist in Chinese massage, notably the « gunfa » which uses the pressure of the knuckles in a rhythmic rolling movement to alleviate tension.

There is also a kneading technique called roufa which uses the base of the hand in a static rotative movement as well as mofa, a circular sliding pressure. Vibrations (zhenfa) are often used, particularly to relieve tension areas that have been worked on.The forearms and even elbows can be used as well as the hands. Different acupuncture points can be stimulated to alleviate varying problems according to Chinese medicine.

Generally speaking TuiNa tries to find your aches and pains and act upon them.

TuiNa is a very complete form of massage, working from the tips of the toes to the top of the head. As such you can benefit from it on just part of your body e.g. feet or head and still come away feeling invigorated.

Just Massage offers Traditional Chinese massage as a full body massage (60 or 90 minutes) or Part Body massages.

For less stress, add magnesium

There are plenty of spas around here in France which are based around the healing powers of their local mineral-rich thermal spa waters – there’s a long history of “taking the waters” in Europe generally.

Budapest's Szechenyi thermal baths

It can be hard to bathe every day at home in mineral water but you can add mineral salts to a bath once a week to mimic the spa experience at home.

Research shows that two-thirds of us are deficient in magnesium, which has been proven to help ease stress, headaches, muscle tension and help regulate bowel movements to ease constipation.

You can add magnesium flakes to your bath (available from health food stores) or try old-fashioned Epsom Salts, which are high in magnesium (by the way, check out these 13 uses of Epsom salts whilst you’re at it or Hello Natural’s Healing Epsom Salt bath soak).

salt

I myself swear by a daily 300mg magnesium supplement to radically ease my PMS symptoms (notably the raging beast I helplessly become just before my period – but strangely only since the birth of my third child…).

Having just bought some Epsom salts, I’m going to try them out too in a bath…as soon as I have a bath.Well I do have a bath but it has a sort of seat in it and basically you can’t have a decent bath in it, believe me, I’ve tried. Very good for bathing kids though (it works kind of like half a bath). Confused? Don’t be.

I’ll maybe try a foot soak in the meantime.

Not my feet by the way!

Of course I’ve told you here that magnesium can help your muscle tension, headaches and stress, but so too can massage.
