For a more philosophical approach – with fewer calories! – imagine you only have 48 hours to live.

What would you do?

This exercise helps you see what is important in your life – people rarely say they’d be at work!

Thinking like this can help put things in perspective and limit the time you spend at work.

I spoke last week of decluttering your work space, but you should do the same in your home life. Being organised at home AND at work can free up time to do the things that matter.

No self-respecting massage blog could sign off an article about de-stressing without suggesting a massage.

UNWIND from being busy 3

I’ve given you 1 minute wonders, 5 minute wonders, now for some 10 minute wonders to stay calm in moment’s of stress.

A little visualisation technique to imagine your perfect day, free from the work and chores of our day-to-day lives.

Close your eyes and imagine all the great things you would do on your perfect day from the moment you wake up.

It can be whatever you want it to be – relaxing with your family and friends, or having a pamper day just for you, jetting off to a luxurious resort or spending the day reading.

When you’re feeling stressed, recalling this perfect day can help to calm you.

Practise the visualisation regularly to help you focus on what you want out of life and create a healthier work-life balance.

2. DECLUTTER. OK, you may need more than 10 minutes for this (I just decluttered my kitchen and it took 5 days! Tells you something about the state of my kitchen, I guess…). But start small, with your desk.

Just clearing out your working space can save you loads of time in the long run. Suddenly things you spend ages looking for are at your fingertips! Try it and see (then maybe move onto something bigger, you’re feeling inspired, right!)

Last thoughts next Friday.

UNWIND from being busy 2

As promised, and since I’m never going to have a pensieve (see last week’s post!), here’s the next in the series on how to stay calm when you’ve a zillion things to do.

5 minute wonders

1. MASSAGE YOUR NECK.  Place your fingertips either side of the base of your neck and massage in a circular motion, working your way up to the base of the skull. Press up and under the base of the skull to help release tension (this can be quite a tender area). Enhance the effect with a muscle rub or a teaspoon of oil with a drop of lavender, bergamot or wintergreen essential oils.Man Rubbing His Shoulder Muscle

2. GO FLOPPY. Tense up your whole body, including your face  for 10-15 seconds then let go and be a floppy doll. Repeat up to three times to de-stress and remind your body what it’s like to be relaxed!stretch3. DAYDREAM. You got told off for it at school but it’s actually quite relaxing to daydream – it’s like a mini-break for your brain and can release tension and anxiety. You’ll get back to the job in hand feeling refreshed.DAYDREAM

See you next Friday for part 3.

UNWIND from being busy

Or how to stay calm when you have a zillion things to do!

OK, so we women are supposed to be good at multi-tasking but hey, don’t push us.

If you’ve read or watched the Harry Potter stories, you’ll probably remember Professor Dumbledore’s aptly named pensieve, this sort of magic cauldron in which you could put your thoughts when your brain is overcrowded so you can see things more clearly. How many times have I  wished I weren’t a muggle and could have one of those!pensieve

Here’s a quote from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Dumbledore speaking to Harry):

I use the Pensieve. One simply siphons the excess thoughts from one’s mind, pours them into the basin, and examines them at one’s leisure. It becomes easier to spot patterns and links, you understand, when they are in this form.

But since we lesser mortals (or Muggles) do not have one, here is the first of a series of 4 posts giving you some ideas on how to relax from our busy lifestyles.

1 minute wonders

1. Just BREATHE. Sounds obvious I know but the idea is to BE AWARE (as Jean-Claude Van Damme would say) of your breathing, a minute of mindfulness concentrating on just that.

Simply take four or five deep breaths right into your stomach (place your hands on your stomach to help you concentrate).

It’s the simplest way to help release any stress building-up.

2. DRINK SOME WATER. Being dehydrated is a trigger to stress because the body reacts negatively to not having enough fluids. DON’T WAIT TO BE THIRSTY to drink.

Here's my Decathlon water bottle

Here’s my Decathlon water bottle

Do like me, keep a water bottle always to hand and sip at it regularly throughout the day. I purposefully bought a bright pink water bottle with measurements on the side (it holds up to 750ml, from Decathlon in France if you’re interested) so I know how much I’ve drunk in the day. I try to refill it, but hey, I also drink three-four cups of tea and herbal tea, so that adds to my fluid intake. Develop a water habit. You’ll feel perkier and your skin will love you for it (plus point).

3. SMILE. Stop frowning all the time (maybe you don’t, good for you) and make an effort to be nice to people. Force the smile if you must (but don’t grit your teeth, it’s a dead giveaway that you’re not being sincere!) and soon you’ll be doing it naturally. Smiling tells your body you’re happy which produces endorphins that make you feel good…so you keep on smiling.

Check out this poem about smiling.

4. SNIFF. Using certain essential oils in a burner or on a handkerchief to inhale can calm. Try lavender, sandalwood or ylang-ylang.oils

Make a date for next Friday to get some ideas for some 5 minute wonders.
